Tell us about your professional background and what you do

Jamie McCasland is an Assistant Professor at the Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia, where she teaches courses in Development Economics. She studies labor markets, firms, and job training programs in low-income countries and migration from low-income to high-income countries. She has conducted field research in Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.

Why did you get involved with BC Newcomer Camp

Jamie specializes in measuring the impact of government and non-governmental programs and brings that expertise to the board. She has a special interest in migration as development policy and is a strong advocate of the role of immigration policy in alleviating human suffering and improving human welfare.

 

What would you say to those reading this to inspire them to get involved with the camp?

Jamie McCasland

Jamie McCasland is an Assistant Professor in the Vancouver School of Economics at UBC, where she teaches courses in Development Economics and studies labor markets, firms, and job training programs in low-income countries. She has a special interest in migration as development policy and is a strong advocate of the potential for immigration policy to alleviate human suffering and improve human welfare. She has always enjoyed working with young people, as a camp counselor in high school, running a tutoring program for immigrant youth while an undergraduate at UCLA, volunteering with UCLA Unicamp, and running sexual and reproductive health peer educator programs as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya.
