My Journey in Becoming a Camp Facilitator for BCNC

We are featuring one of our 2022 Summer Camp Facilitators in a one-on-one interview detailing their journey from their home country to BC Newcomer Camp. Welcome aboard, Fazle!

Please, introduce yourself!
My name is Fazle Elahi. I am 22 years old.
When did you come to Canada?
It was about 2 months ago when I came to Canada.
From which country?
Actually, I came from Pakistan. I left Afghanistan originally one year ago then came to Pakistan and stayed there for about six months. My family and I waited there while our procedure to come to Canada was processing. When I came to Canada, it was about 2 months ago. Right now we are in Vancouver and planning to move to South Surrey, near Newton, where we will start our new life. It has been a great journey so far.
How many members are in your family?
In total, my family has 11 members. My grandpa, my mom, my dad, my two older brothers, their wives, my second brother-in-law’s two little babies, my sister, and me.

When you came to Canada, was there something that you liked that was different from where you lived before?
A lot of things were new to me, like the weather. I really like the weather here. It’s normal, especially in the Summer. Beautiful weather with some beautiful places. The lifestyle, the jobs, and everything is really great.

What made you decide to join BC Newcomer Camp as a Camp Facilitator?
Actually, it was a great opportunity for me to have a new experience in such a good, educational society. I was also a teacher in Afghanistan. I was an English teacher for Middle school and also in an English language course. So I have some experience in this. I also am thankful that I can share what I know to others struggling.

What do you think of the Summer camps?
It is such a good camp. I really enjoy it so far.
How did you find out about BC Newcomer Camp?
When I came to Canada, I was just trying to find a job that would help me to improve my English. Working with English can be a good experience and can be useful for me. I searched through some application forms on Indeed and found it. Fortunately, I got the position and feel lucky to be here.
What is your favourite part about the camps?
Working with the cute kids, sharing their activities, and having fun with them is such a great opportunity. It really is a great job.
