BC Newcomers Camp is a great organization with people who are always looking for ways to improve the ways they can give back to their community through fine tuning their programs.

Tell us about your professional background and what you do

My name is Adwoa and I recently graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in International Relations. My life experiences and major have contributed to my passion for addressing education inequality. During my time at university, I was a part of my campus’ World Universities Services of Canada (WUSC) local committee as a VP of Finance. In later years, I also began working as a grant writer for Simbi Foundation. Both these experiences were centered around newcomers and refugee education, which allowed me to gain experience linked to my interests while giving back to my community.

Why did you get involved with BC Newcomer Camp

I was interested in the work Bahar (BC Newcomer Camp’s Director) mentioned she was involved with after hearing her speak at one of WUSC’s events. Through conversations, Bahar mentioned that BC Newcomer’s was looking for more board members and after meeting with both Bahar and Duncan I believe they felt my experiences would be beneficial to the team.

What would you say to those reading this to inspire them to get involved with the camp?

BC Newcomers Camp is a great organization with people who are always looking for ways to improve the ways they can give back to their community through fine tuning their programs. The leaders and founders are passionate about the work being done and this is reflected in the growth and positive impact this organization has experienced over the years.
